Cubans celebrated this Wednesday the support of the international community at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which once again called for the end of the United States blockade against the Caribbean country.
“Little David once again defeated the giant Goliath. “Little Cuba has once again defeated the neighboring empire that will surely arrogantly ignore the global demand, but the dignity of this people and universal solidarity have once again defeated it,” wrote the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, in his account. from social network X.
The president made reference to the results of the vote on the resolution “Need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, presented by Havana, which received the support of 187 at the UNGA. nations, the abstention of Moldova, and only the votes against the United States and Israel.
In the nation, Cubans celebrated the almost unanimous rejection of the UNGA to the blockade that Washington has maintained against the Antillean country since 1962.
“It is further proof that we are not alone in this fight,” housewife María Valdés, who followed the voting at the United Nations (UN) from her home in the 10 de Octubre municipality of La., told Xinhua. province of Havana.
Like her, Omar Rodríguez, a 47-year-old taxi driver, was grateful that the majority of the world’s countries asked the UN for an end to US policy against his country.
“The blockade seeks to cause despair and suffering in the population; it affects all Cubans to some extent,” said Rodríguez, who found out about the results of the vote on the radio. Put into effect in 1962, the United States blockade was intensified during the Donald Trump Administration, during which 243 sanctions were issued against the Caribbean nation.
According to the figures from the latest report on the damages of the blockade against Cuba, presented by the Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, from March 1, 2023 to February 29 of this year, the blockade caused material damages to Cuba in the order of 5,056 million dollars, which means an increase of almost 200 million dollars compared to the previous period.
It is the thirty-second time that a proposed decree against Washington’s hostility towards Havana is being debated. In each of the previous votes, the international community spoke out in favor of eliminating the siege and the rest of the measures against the Cuban Government and people.
