Cuban vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 variants: What should you know?

In this context, what has happened to Cuban vaccines?

Martínez Díaz pointed out that, of the first four municipalities in Havana that began vaccination, “we have only had eight weeks to measure effectiveness. In other municipalities it is six, four weeks. In other words, now we are having the opportunity to start measuring what has happened in Cuba ”.

Showing a graph about the period from May to August 24, the doctor referred to the trend in terms of new daily cases per million inhabitants.

“There is an increasing trend. But if we only take the example of Havana, where vaccination first began, we see that in May this province had a higher incidence level than the country’s average. Then, there came a time when the capital was even below the country’s average.

“If we go to the first four Havana municipalities to begin vaccination, where we were first able to appreciate the effects, the incidence was first above the provincial average incidence and, likewise, it later became below.

“What happened at the beginning of July? The more contagious delta variant begins to circulate in Havana, and the number of cases increases. Unvaccinated and, to a lesser extent, vaccinated people begin to get sick.

“The trend in recent days in Havana for the average incidence to approach that of those four municipalities where it was first vaccinated. Why? Because the rest of the municipalities have already carried out the process and a period has passed for immunity to mature in vaccinated people ”, he explained.

In the case of fatality, the president of BioCubaFarma recalled that when vaccination began in May, it was much higher in Havana than the country’s average. But with the vaccination process, which began in the four municipalities with the most complex epidemiological situation, there came a time in those territories when fatality decreased compared to Havana and the country.

“Despite the arrival of the delta variant in July and the fatality increased a little, in these four initial municipalities it did so six times less than in Havana and the country.

“Obviously, the factor in this case is vaccination. Mortality has decreased six times in the Havana municipalities where vaccination began ”.

Martínez Díaz reported that Studies are being carried out with working groups of the Minsap and the BioCubaFarma centers, by provinces, the results of which will be reported, “but there is clearly evidence that the vaccine is being effective.”

He specified that it is being studied in Matanzas and in those municipalities where time has passed after vaccination, which makes it possible to make an analysis of the effectiveness of the vaccines, and “the results are positive.”

On the Isle of Youth, in addition to complying with the vaccination scheme in its entirety, isolation has been carried out very well.

“There is evidence that our vaccines work. There have been attempts at manipulation, because it is being vaccinated and cases are increasing. That is happening in the world: the numbers of cases are increasing. It is known that it is because the delta variant has these characteristics that we have mentioned. The global consensus is that the greatest strength of immunization with the vaccines that currently exist internationally is to avoid the risk of severity and death ”, he concluded.
