Cuban triple jumpers show high level in closing of Cuban Athletics Cup

During the closing of the 2023 Cuban Athletics Cup, held at the Pan-American Stadium, the participation of Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea in the women’s triple jump stood out.

Pérez, fourth in the World Championships in Eugene, United States, last year, stretched this Sunday to 14.80 meters (m) to win that test and achieve a personal best.

The 21-year-old girl thus surpassed the 14.70 m reached in the world event hosted by the US, so she continues to show signs of her competitive progression.

I got a bit tangled at first with some technical inaccuracies, but on the fourth attempt I was able to correct and that good result came out, Pérez told the press, who assured that it is possible to continue improving this record.

Povea, owner of the fifth Tokyo 2020 Olympic place and bronze medalist at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, he was in second position with 14.73 m.

Both triplets, with very good performance in the indoor winter tour, will leave in a few days for Europe to compete in different events, including the Diamond League.

In other performances on the final date of that tournament, Francisco Ronnei Estévez won the men’s 10,000m with a time of 29 minutes, 54 seconds and 78 hundredths, ahead of Dairan Suárez (30.22.85) and Elier Martínez (32: 22.62).

Another champion of the day was the long jumper Maykel Massó, winner of the bronze metal in the fight under the five rings of the Japanese capital, which he won in that specialty with 8.36 m.

For the athletes from the largest of the Antilles, the Cuban Athletics Cup served as preparation for the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, to be held from June 23 to July 8.
