2020 was a tough year, very tough, and the radio has not been exempt. In its sonorous character of accompaniment to our people, also like the people, it transformed their daily lives, in the face of the impact of Covid-19.
And that transformation has been linked to a redesign of its programming from the tip of Maisi to Cabo de San Antonio in its 100 floors, its 78 institutional websites and blog, and its thousands of creators interacting on social media.
An element of interest to be highlighted is the fact that the Cuban Radio System completed in all its stations the institutional profiles on the social network Twitter, (100 stations and the leading profiles of the Cuban Radio Portal @radio_cubana and @radionline, the latter with more than 25,300 followers.
In a balance of data collected with the closing in November, we can affirm that Cuban Radio today has 1024 profiles of its creators on Twitter, among which journalists, program directors, announcers, sound producers, advisers and executives stand out.
Facebook is also recognized as the social medium with the greatest interaction and participation of our radio operators, with more than 1686 profiles associated with pages and groups created in 2020.
The actions of Cuba in the confrontation with Covid-19, the work of scientists, the contribution of medical students, the consecration of specialists, doctors and nurses and the strategy of (massive) accompaniment from other entities, are also topics that have recreated in their posts the new groups created on Telegram and Facebook (examples: Amigos de la Radio, Followers of Radio Reloj, La Vuelta Abajo, Tiempo 21 (from Las Tunas), Guajiros Guantanameros

Many examples can be highlighted, among them the strengthening and increase of the YouTube channels of the entire system, and with the contribution of the experience of new journalists (with skills and abilities in the use of mobile telephony) programs have been carried out – summaries to the networks from isolation centers, health control, the role of doctors, nurses, the controversial food distribution, in a much more equitable way.
The tours made by the Presidents of the Defense Councils in the provinces, and the work of the municipal governments have been accompanied by the radio and their concerted expression on the networks. Without de-gilding the contribution and support to the work of the Revolution in every point of our radio archipelago, both together with the public health authorities and the personnel mobilized to organize and distribute regulated products to seek the right balance in the acquisition of goods, with everyone and for everyone.
Onelio Castillo Corderí, Director General of the Cuban Radio, affirmed this in an early Round Table just after the first 100 days of confrontation with the pandemic:
“More than 70 percent of the one-day air time of the Cuban Radio system has had a totally renovating change in this epidemiological contingency” ….
Our radio stations have reconfigured their programming and with the support of the knowledge of communicators (narrators, broadcasters, journalists, artists), the interests of the audience have prevailed above all, this is the reason why there is an increase in the participation of psychologists, epidemiologists and members of specialized health centers.
All the Cuban stations did their own coverage of the MINSAP Press Conferences that with the visual support of what was published on the institutional website of CubaMinsap, they were immediately replicated on the websites and social networks, both on radio and television.
It is gratifying to admire the participation of young people who have been inserted in our radio stations, graduates of the academy, with creative and innovative ideas. With this new force, we are sure that the future of radio in Cuba will be multiple and impressive. Without a doubt, we will have a greater sound presence on other platforms that, using new communication codes, will multiply our existence as an essential means for our nation.
