Cuban Jariel Esquivel, owner of the barbershop which was burned last Friday, March 22 in the city of Hialeahshared more details of the case, also revealing that he knows the person who is being accused of committing the arson very well.
The detainee was identified as Miguel Reyes Junior, a 38-year-old Cuban, who is in prison, accused of causing the fire along with citizen Alberto González, who remains a fugitive.
Esquivel indicated to Telemundo 51 that he came to work in another barbershop that belonged to the detainee, pointing out that he got to know him well thanks to the job he offered him.
“He tells me: ‘come here and I’ll give you a job’, because he knew that I was always a loyal, hard-working, compliant person,” he explained, also indicating that that job ended when he and his brother wanted to start a business together.
“I don’t owe him anything. I just wanted to start my business with my brother,” added the Cuban.
When asked if this could have been a “war between barbers,” Esquivel denied it, pointing out that, at least from his perspective, there was no problem between them.
“There has never been any war between barbers, nor will there ever be a war between barbers. It is simply a conflict towards this business, and I don’t know the reasons,” said the owner of the destroyed premises.
Suggesting that the attack could have been due to the success the newly opened barbershop was having, the owner said he did not believe this was the case, as each business has its own clientele based on tastes.
“I know that I am no competition for him. All barbers, whether we own a place or not, have our style and our way of working towards the client. In one way or another I don’t see it as competition,” concluded the affected person.
The owner of the burned barbershop indicated that the eight people who worked alongside him have had to make a living elsewhere, some in other barbershops and others in construction work.
“It hurts a lot to see them the way they are, desperate because I don’t even have the knowledge of how long this could take,” he explained when asked about a possible reopening.
The Cuban started a campaign on the GoFundMe platform to raise the necessary funds to recover the hairdressing tools he lost during the fire, as well as to repair the premises and reopen it in the future.
