A young mother who worked as a nurse at the ‘Miguel Enríquez’ Hospital, also known as ‘La Benéfica’, in Havana, ended her life after jumping from the eighth floor of the building on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 24.
The complaint, made by Dr. Alexander Jesús Figueredo Izaguirre, was accompanied by a powerful video in which the victim’s body can be seen on the ground, all while several people looked through the hospital windows.
The body would have remained visible to everyone for about four minutes, before two doctors arrived at the scene to cover it with a blanket.
In the following hours, the woman was identified as Giselle Villafranca Llerena, 24 years old, who suffered from mental problems.
According to the influencer Niover Licea, the young nurse was a resident of the Reboredo neighborhood of San Francisco de Paula.
A relative of the deceased, identified as Adryan Pérez Serrano, confirmed that the woman used to suffer many nervous breakdowns due to a mental illness and that this would have caused her to jump from the eighth floor of the hospital.
“She had paranoid schizophrenia… And she was admitted because she was in crisis as a result of her illness… she was a nurse and worked in said hospital. Evidently, she knew how to get to the eighth floor… it’s a shame, really. My condolences to the family… This is a terrible disease,” this person said.
Dr. Figueredo Izaguirre also reported something similar, stating Yessi Pérez, another relative of the nurse, confirmed the woman’s condition.
“The girl had schizophrenia problems and was nervously ill. She was my cousin, a tremendous nurse, woman, friend and mother,” he indicated.
It is important to know that paranoid schizophrenia is a subtype of schizophrenia that affects the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves.
Those who suffer from it suffer symptoms that cause delusions and hallucinations, particularly delusions of persecution or grandeur, which can generate extreme distrust and hostility towards other people, including family members.
Patients who are diagnosed with this illness typically maintain a greater awareness of reality compared to other subtypes of schizophrenia, although they may experience psychotic symptoms that affect their ability to function in society.
