Miami-Dade County authorities arrested a man of Cuban origin identified as Carlos Oropesa Jiménez, 60 years old, who is the main suspect of having caused an accident in which one person died in the middle of last year.
According to the media Local 10 News, Police summoned the subject after a lengthy investigation, which culminated in his arrest on charges of vehicular manslaughter on March 4.
The Cuban, a resident of Kendale Lakes, went to court on Tuesday the 5th to participate in a hearing related to the charges against him.
This incident occurred on July 24, 2023, at the intersection of Southwest Eighth Street and 142 Avenue. The police report indicates that the accident ended the life of one person the next day, this as a result of the injuries caused by Oropesa.
The Miami-Dade Police Department maintains that Oropesa Jiménez was driving a gold 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, which collided with a white 2017 Mercedes Benz GLE 350 in which the victim was traveling.
The Cuban was moving along the center lane of Calle Ocho and tried to pass another vehicle on the sidewalk, something that is prohibited by law. In the process of this dangerous act, Oropesa crashed into the victim’s Mercedes and then into a black 2022 Hyundai Venue.
This incident was captured on the video cameras of some drivers, which was used as evidence against the detainee. Likewise, some witnesses stated that they saw the subject while he crossed all lanes of traffic towards the right sidewalk and turned “suddenly” shortly before the accident.
The subject told the authorities that he did not remember colliding with the Mercedes Benz, and assured that he changed lanes to “avoid” a collision with a red Jeep that was in front of his vehicle.
These arguments were disproved by reviewing his vehicle’s data, which showed that he was traveling at 66 mph (106 km/h) in an area where the speed limit was 45 mph (72 km/h), and that The brake was not being used at the time of the crash.
In Florida, vehicular manslaughter is considered a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Now, the Cuban is detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, where he awaits bail.
