Immigration control authorities at Miami International Airport threatened a Cuban family with taking away their Green Cards if they continued traveling back to the Island.
The case was reported by the family to journalist Javier Díaz, from Univisión, to whom they pointed out that the family has been living in the United States for 18 years. The complainant, who requested to remain anonymous, indicated that she has traveled to the Island on multiple occasions during this time, but that she had never received this warning.
The woman points out that the incident occurred on January 29, when the family returned to Miami after having spent time in the Greater Antilles.
According to their statements, when the family went through immigration control, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer carefully reviewed their passports and asked them several questions. After that, he told them that there was a possibility of losing their US residency if they continued visiting the Island.
The authority argued that they had contradictions in the story of asylum requested by the parents almost 20 years ago, something that did not look good if one took into account the continuous trips back to the country from which they allegedly did everything to escape.
In this regard, immigration lawyer José Guerrero indicated that these types of warnings are not new, but they are worrying due to the immigration status of the affected family.
Everything takes on greater relevance if we take into account the recent statements of Senator Marco Rubio, who has questioned this type of behavior in Cuban asylum seekers for years.
“If a year later you are here as a refugee, but you return to Cuba six times, shouldn’t you at least lose your refugee status?” the official questioned the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, during one of the hearings held. the Senate.
What mistakes can cost you your Green Card?
According to the law, a person can lose their permanent residence in the United States if they commit certain offenses, such as leaving the United States for prolonged periods of time without requesting a re-entry permit; moves and settles in another country and demonstrates the intention to live permanently there; does not declare his income annually to the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and commits crimes considered serious or felonies.
Likewise, those who do not renew the Green Card may face problems, especially when it comes to proving legal residence and traveling to another country.
It is necessary to note that any type of fraud or false statement during the Green Card application process may result in the revocation of said residence.
