Cuban engineer dies in the Dominican Republic after a work accident – 2024-02-12 10:12:14

A Cuban engineer identified as Gerardo Oscar Fernández Rivery, 66 years old, died after suffering several injuries during a work accident that occurred in the province of La Altagracia, in the Dominican Republic.

According to information that was shared on social networks, the incident occurred on February 7 in the city of Higüey, where the Cuban worked on a construction site.

Everything indicates that the engineer fell from the fourth floor around 10:26 am, and that, due to the severity of his injuries, the medical units that were mobilized to the site could not do anything to save his life.

Local media indicate that Fernández suffered a severe blow to the right parietal region of the head at the time of his fall, as well as abrasions to the thorax and several fractures to the left femur, tibia and fibula.

Some witnesses indicated that the engineer was preparing to descend to the first level of the work from the fourth floor. This was normally done through a main staircase, but for some reason the Cuban used secondary stairs, falling into the void for reasons that have not been clarified.

Now, the authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances under which the fatal accident occurred, to clarify responsibilities. This will include a complete examination of the body, which was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Pathology (Inacif).

His employment information indicates that Fernández served as project supervisor for the company Construcciones, Montajes e Ingeniería (CMI) Dominicana, a job he had carried out since 2017.

For now, it is unknown if the engineer was in the Dominican Republic on an official mission representing the Castro regime, or if he had managed this employment contract on his own account.

The deceased graduated from the Ciudad Universitaria José Antonio Echeverría (CUJAE), now known as the Technological University of Havana ‘José Antonio Echeverría’, in 1982, subsequently obtaining 11 years of experience as engineering director at Alastor with the supervision and control of all engineering, construction and assembly activities of the company.

Likewise, the Cuban worked in the capital of the Island as a specialist for the Maintenance and Generation Company with Fuel Oil Generating Sets.
