A Cuban resident in Miami lost his life last Tuesday night, March 12, after a driver fatally hit him and then fled in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Florida.
According to the media Univisionthe incident occurred at 8:39 pm, southwest of Eighth Avenue and Eighth Street, when Tomás Brito was trying to get home after going out to buy cigarettes at a nearby 7 Eleven.
According to relatives of the deceased, he was just one block from his home at the time of being hit.
Security cameras from a business located on 8th Street captured the exact moment in which a car hit Brito with great force, projecting him into the air before he fell in front of the same car and it ran over him with its rear wheels.
After the spectacular collision, the car responsible for the incident fled, leaving the Cuban on the ground and without help.
Eventually, someone noticed Brito’s presence in the middle of the street, so they called the authorities. The Cuban was rushed by Miami firefighters to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, but he died shortly after due to the severity of his injuries.
According to the authorities, it was very likely that the driver would not have had to respond legally, since Brito crossed the street in an area he should not have, however, by fleeing the scene without informing the authorities and without assisting the Cuban, he committed a serious crime.
“If the owner or the person driving had stopped, he would not have been facing charges, but by leaving the scene, he will now be facing very serious charges,” said Mike Vega, spokesman for the Police Department during a press conference.
Authorities said the car involved in the crash was found abandoned in the area of Coral Way and Southwest 14th Avenue the next day. This was a BMW that had heavy damage to the front, where it hit the citizen.
The owner of this vehicle reported its alleged theft two hours after the crash was recorded.
The Cuban turned 40 last week, and now his family is looking for the driver responsible so that he can face justice. His mother, Dulce del Pino, indicated that he left behind two teenage children who reside in West Palm Beach, as well as his wife, a brother and an uncle.
Miami-Dade County police have requested the community’s help to find the person responsible for the incident. In that sense, they urge anyone with information to contact the county’s crime stop line, at 305-471-8477, where reports can be made anonymously.
