Cuban Customs drastically increased the number of officers at the ‘José Martí’ International Airport in Havana, due to the incorporation of several students who are doing their work practices there.
According to an official statement shared on social networks, these future Customs officers will be taught what is necessary to carry out their work at the capital’s airport.
The letter states that they will be taught “integrity” and “excellence” in the service, an implicit recognition of the large number of cases of corruption that are reported within Customs.
The authorities indicated that 10 new newly qualified officers joined the Postal and Shipping department within Customs at the end of last week, this after recognizing “the results obtained by the students.”
The call to join Customs has been in circulation in recent weeks, given the mass exodus of its personnel. Those interested in joining must meet certain requirements, including a certain age and the appropriate educational level.
The greater presence of Customs officers must be taken into account by travelers who plan to visit the Island, especially because Nelson Cordovés Reyes, Head of Customs, warned in previous weeks that they were going to have a tough hand with those who abused of the free import of food, medicine and hygiene products.
During his warning, the official recalled that many people had been entering the country with large volumes of these goods for alleged commercial purposes, something for which these measures were not implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is a measure that was approved in complex situations in the country, so that people could have access to medicines, food, hygiene, but not so that it was used as a way to import these products in significant volumes, for marketing,” indicated on Cuban Television.
Likewise, citizens have taken to social networks to report that Customs authorities had become stricter when it came to checking travelers’ luggage. and that they were seizing a greater quantity of merchandise.
