The difference between Cuba and abroad is something that has surprised Cubans who have been able to emigrate or vacation outside the Island, and although it is common for adults to be impressed, when they are children who are amazed by the abundance, the emotional impact is usually be even older.
And while the store shelves in Cuba are empty and what little there is is inaccessible to most pockets, upon arriving in other countries migrants may be aware that even things to which they rarely had access in the Island, are easy to get to, close, varied and abundant.
This impression was what a little newcomer to the United States had, in a video that has gone viral for showing his reaction when seeing the variety of soccer balls in a store.
The child’s tender reaction upon entering a supermarket and seeing a wall full of balls of different colors has moved thousands of users on the Internet, reminding them that even everyday things in other countries can bring joy to the little ones.
“What is this?” asks the little boy without taking his eyes off the balls, in the video shared on TikTok by the user identified as Milagros Navarro.
“Our grandson was surprised to see the soccer balls. It is sad that children in Cuba cannot have anything, but we gave them their pleasure,” the grandmother expressed on the social network.
The publication caused an avalanche of comments, which ranged from expressing tenderness for the little one, to frustration over the situation on the Island that has children and adults without being able to have luxuries of any kind.
Many shared their own similar anecdotes about themselves and their relatives who have been impressed by other “everyday” things outside the Island, but which made a great impression on them.
“How much happiness they have stolen from us”; “I came to this country when I was 24 years old and I cried in the toy aisle. It is hard what our children experience”; “It is impressive what children miss in Cuba”; “My father cried the first time he saw the meat aisle of the supermarket. It is hard to know everything that has been stolen from us”; “If as an adult you are impressed when you arrive in this country, imagine the joy of that child. See and have what he never could”, were some of the comments.
