Cuban baseball player Yuni Gurriel is celebrating, because this Thursday, May 9, he achieved one of the most desired dreams of migrants from his country: US citizenship.
Through his social networks, the Cuban baseball player shared the good news with his followers and friends, letting them know that as of this Thursday he is an American citizen.
On his Instagram account, the athlete shared a photograph that has already become a recognizable symbol of those who achieve this great step in their immigration process.
The image shows the athlete leaving the immigration offices, with the replica of the Statue of Liberty and a small United States flag in his hand, also with the sign announcing the citizenship process in the background.
“Thank God, now I am an American citizen,” wrote the Cuban athlete, with a big smile that shows his joy at the great achievement.
The procedure is the most sought after by those who arrive in the US in search of a better life, as it fully guarantees all the rights of individuals born in the country, including voting.
The truth is that, although achieving this entails the approval of several requirements, including an exam and a certain command of the English language, according to the US government, more than half of Cuban migrants manage to complete the process and obtain citizenship.
It could thus be considered the culmination of the so-called “American dream”, which is what is pursued not only by those who are already on American soil, but also by those who still remain in Cuba – or their respective countries of origin – and dream of emigrating one day to the North American nation.
For this reason, the reactions of Internet users were immediate, and friends, colleagues and followers of the baseball player left their congratulations and good wishes in the publication.
“Congratulations”; “I’m very happy, enjoy”; “You are already a gringo”; “Now yes, real American”; “You deserve it my life, everything good in the world for you,” were some of the comments for the player.
With this, Gurriel joins the list of Cuban celebrities who have achieved US citizenship, such as Jacob Forever, Osmani García, Descemer Bueno, and more recently, the reggaeton artist Señorita Dayana.
