In recent years, the return of Cuban baseball players, residing abroad, to different championships on the island, namely the National Series, the Elite League and even the Provincial Series developed by the different territories, has been in the news. A few days ago we talked about catcher and first baseman Alexander Guerra Muñoz, based in the United States and with experience in Minor Leagues, who defends the colors of the Jiguaní municipality in the current Granma provincial tournament.

Today we will refer to another athlete who must join the Villa Clara Provincial Series or the Champion Clubs Tournament at some point. This is Pablo Luis Guillén Díaz, who was discharged from the Santa Clara facility, as reported a week ago by colleague Dairon Pérez Urbano.

His promotion does not necessarily mean that the pitcher intervenes in the Provincial, but rather it is the legal movement for him to defend the team in question – if he wins the competition – in the Champion Clubs Tournament, in case it is not suspended, as reported Yunior Rodríguez, active collaborator of the Facebook group Leopardos Azucareros de Villa Clara.

Guillén, who has settled on American soil for a few years, had his most recent professional experience in the German Bundesliga. He remained with the Guggenberger Legionäre club from May to July 2024 and between the regular phase and the playoffs he added eight games (two starts), 32.1 innings, 17 hits allowed, a single home run, 44 strikeouts, nine walks, four wins, one setback and a rescue. They hit less than .150 and his ERA was approximately 2.25.

The right-hander was able to enter the German circuit thanks to the fact that he has a Spanish passport, which also allowed him to join the Iberian national team that won the title of the 2023 European Championship, held in the Czech Republic, where he had a 2-0 record, with an average of earned runs of 1.80, two walks and 12 strikeouts.

His documentation also opened the doors for him to play in the Italian Serie A, with Parma Baseball, in 2023. In 12 challenges he achieved five successes, three losses, one save, an ERA of 3.54 and 52 outs via strikes in 48.1 chapters.

The 26-year-old pitcher, with brief forays into professional baseball in Venezuela, at the service of Tigres de Aragua and Navegantes de Magallanes, was in five National Series (56, 57, 58, 59 and 60) with the Villa Clara Leopardos. He worked in 70 games, with a favorable record of 19 wins, nine losses and the same number of saves, an ERA of 2.71, 132 walks, 162 strikeouts and a single home run allowed in 248.2 innings.
