A Cuban mother is pleading for a humanitarian visa to be able to take her young son with leukemia off the island, in the hope that he can receive treatment abroad, where there is no shortage of medicines.
According to the information shared by the media Univisionthe child, only three years old, needs a bone marrow transplant, something for which the self-proclaimed medical power does not have the resources.
The woman, identified by the aforementioned media as Elena Cabrera Morell, indicated that she needs urgent help, and that her son is currently admitted to the pediatric hospital in Camagüey.
Cabrera Morell maintains that the minor has a reserved prognosis, and that he is only receiving the treatment available at the institution, which helps him a little, but is not what he requires to begin treating his illness.
The child, identified as little Harold Vargas Cabrera, suffers from acute myeloblastic leukemia, a type of leukemia that is more commonly seen in adults, so the effect it can have on his body has worried everyone.
The child’s mother assures that the Greater Antilles does not have even the simplest reagents, making it impossible to carry out tests to determine if the minor is compatible with a possible donor.
In that sense, carrying out this delicate procedure on the Island, where there are more and more complaints related to bad practices in hospitals, is out of the question.
Due to the situation, the woman went to social networks in the hope that someone could help or advise her, since she needs the minor to be cared for outside of Cuba if she wants to see an improvement.
“I ask whoever may be interested to please help me with my child,” said the woman in a video shared by journalist Javier Díaz.
Cases like that of little Harold have become more common in recent yearssince the shortage of medicines and the economic crisis that the Island is experiencing make it impossible for hospitals to have the supplies and equipment necessary to treat some of the less common diseases.
