A man of Cuban origin was arrested by Florida authorities after leading a dangerous chase that culminated in an accident in northwest Miami-Dade County. After being identified, police realized that the man was allegedly involved in a homicide that occurred in Louisville, Kentucky, last weekend.
According to the media Local 10 Newsthe Cuban was identified as Liobys Caro Mena, 38 years old, who is considered by the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department as a “person of interest” in the case of the murder of citizen Alain García Pérez, 45 years old.
Authorities indicated that the victim was found dead in his home, located in the Iroquois neighborhood, with several injuries caused by a blunt object.
At the time of his arrest, Caro was driving a red Chevrolet Camaro, which was owned by García Pérez. The arrest was made after Kentucky authorities informed the Miami-Dade Police Department about the vehicle and its possible whereabouts in Florida.
After spotting the car, officers attempted to stop it, but Caro accelerated and attempted to evade authorities. The chase ended when the car crashed into at least six other vehicles and overturned near the intersection of Northwest 119th Street.
Despite the dramatic nature of the accident, Caro Mena turned out to be the only person with considerable injuries, so he was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The police transported the stolen car to the facilities of the field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is located in the city of Miramar.
Now, the Cuban faces several charges in South Florida for vehicle theft, fleeing from police and evading authority, as well as leaving the scene of an accident without serious bodily injury, reckless driving and driving without a license.
These charges are in addition to those he faces in the state of Kentucky, where he is accused of murder. For now, Caro will remain in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bail of $30,000, although it is possible that he will be extradited to Kentucky.
According to statements made in court, the Cuban arrived in the United States approximately a year and a half ago, and both he and the victim, García Pérez, had ties to South Florida.
