Florida authorities arrested a man of Cuban origin accused of having committed more than 50 robberies at different construction sites in Port St Lucie.
According to the medium Telemundo, the detainee was identified as Arnoldo Pérez Mirabal, 50 years old and resident of Greenacres, in Palm Beach County. His arrest occurred on April 5.
According to Richard del Toro, Port St Lucie police chief, the detainee used to travel from Palm Beach to Port St Lucie relatively frequently, this to rob the new real estate developments in the area, where the lack of residents provided the opportunity perfect for committing robberies without being discovered.
The Cuban would have taken advantage of this lack of security measures to steal around $60,000 in various materials, mainly the electrical boxes and panels that had already been installed in several future homes.
Detectives indicated that, from February 20 to 27 of this year, 27 additional burglaries were reported in homes under construction. These burglaries occurred in the 14200 block of Southwest Britton Avenue, the 11800 block of Southwest Macelli Way, and the 9700 block of Southwest Triton Way, where nearly $28,000 worth of items were stolen.
Due to the value of the stolen material, as well as the quantity, Florida authorities were forced to treat this crime scene as an important one, so several resources were allocated to solving the case.
The police chief indicated that the area was closed while multiple investigators gathered evidence and fingerprints, which allowed them to obtain the evidence necessary to identify and arrest the suspect.
Del Toro took the opportunity to issue a warning to potential criminals who are thinking of committing the same crime, noting that these types of actions are treated very seriously by the authorities of Port St Lucie, one of the largest cities in Florida.
For now, the Cuban remains detained in the St Lucie prison, where the judge in charge of the case imposed an incredible bail of 1.2 million dollars.
