Texas state authorities arrested a man of Cuban origin after he was caught transporting around 530 pounds of marijuana.
According to journalist Patsy Casas, from TelemundoUnited States Border Patrol (USBP) agents made this arrest on February 4, near a checkpoint on Highway 385.
The information indicates that the officers ordered several vehicles that approached the point to stop, but they noticed that one of them tried to leave the road. Upon approaching, the agents ordered the driver to open the car to inspect it, thus finding the drugs distributed in 19 individual packages.
According to the report, the suspicious packages were covered by a blanket in the back of the car, so a trained dog was brought in to inspect their contents.
“A Border Patrol canine indicated the presence of narcotics and the packages tested positive for marijuana,” Casas said.
“The surveillance of our Border Patrol agents in Alpine, Texas, led to a significant seizure of illegal marijuana,” Big Bend Sector Border Patrol Chief Agent Walter N. Slosar said at a press conference.
According to the calculations of Telemundothe 530 pounds of marijuana have an estimated street value of $424,232.
The Cuban, whose identity was not revealed, was arrested for possession of an illegal controlled substance under Federal Law. The packages were confiscated and the case was left in the hands of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
“Our agents, as part of their border security mission, intercept illegal narcotics being transported across the border destined for the interior of the country. The work they do to disrupt the drug smuggling operations of transnational criminal organizations is vital to protecting our citizens from these illegal substances,” Slosar added.
