Florida authorities arrested a woman of Cuban origin accused of physically attacking an elderly person after an argument between neighbors.
According to the local media America TeVéthe Cuban was identified as María Arteaga, 51 years old, and the incident took place in a housing complex located in the city of Miami.
The report indicates that a resident of the area went to Arteaga’s home to complain about the noise that the detainee and her family were making. This led to an argument that escalated until the woman attacked the victim.
A witness who managed to witness the attack called 911, so police officers went to the location at 95 Northeast 71st Street and detained the Cuban woman.
The aforementioned media indicates that the Cuban woman threatened the neighbor who witnessed everything, this in a desperate attempt to stop her from contacting the police.
The woman appeared in court where the judge in charge of the case issued two charges against her for assault and assault on a person over 65 years of age. A public lawyer was assigned to the detainee and a restraining order was imposed in favor of the victim.
Police urge Florida residents to contact property management or law enforcement when complaining about their neighbors’ behavior, as many such cases can end in disputes.
According to Florida law, assaulting people over 60 years of age can result in a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, depending on the type of assault.
Assaults or abuse that do not cause physical injury, such as neglect or emotional abuse, are considered a third-degree felony, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 (USD).
Abuse that results in serious bodily injury or permanent disability elevates the felony to first degree, which carries penalties of up to 30 years in prison and fines of $10,000.
Due to the nature of the attack carried out by the Cuban, it is suspected that the minor could receive a year in prison and a fine of 1,000 USD, with about 12 months of probation.
