Cuban-American senator Ted Cruz expressed his support for Matthew McConaughey’s candidacy for governor of Texas after the popular actor flirted with that possibility, but considered that it was not the best time to run.
McConaughey, a native of that state and a resident of Austin, had said that he has held meetings with the main political leaders of the territory and that he is dissatisfied with the management of current governor Greg Abbott.
Cruz He commented on a radio program where he was questioned about the fact that the actor seemed a “formidable candidate”, and described him as a charming and kind person. However, he said that he hopes he will not run at this time due to a question of political loyalty.
“He is a charming person, very kind. He is a movie star. And, let’s face it, a movie star, charismatic, with a good appearance, kind, can become an exceptional candidate on a political ballot,” said the Cuban-American.
But “I hope that does not happen, that it does not happen now. Ultimately only he knows what he wants to do. He is going to be the one who makes the decision to launch or not. But hopefully it does not happen now,” he stressed.
For Cruz, in the election – which will be held in November 2022 – McConaughey would have as an opponent the current governor, who has already announced that he would run for reelection.
The former presidential candidate said Abbott is a personal friend and mentor to him, and for that reason he owes him loyalty.
That is the reason why Cruz hopes that McConaughey save your political aspirations for later.
He is young and “has time,” he said.
Although the actor has wanted to say which political party he would run for, in the film industry it is claimed that McConaughey is a Republican.
