Cuban Actor Jorge Perugorría to Receive High Distinction in Cultural Ceremony

The news was confirmed by the Cuban Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, in his account on the social network X, a note in which he congratulated the film director and prominent cultural promoter.

«His talent and acting work have been recognized in multiple national and international spaces. “Millions of admirers will celebrate this award,” wrote the senior Cuban official.

The high distinction will be awarded to Perugorría in the central Havana Yara hall tomorrow, Sunday, in a public cultural event and gala that is part of the extensive celebration agenda for the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (Icaic).

The jury was chaired by the Cuban writer, poet and ethnologist Miguel Barnet, and was also made up of the actress Eslinda Núñez, National Film Award winner; the directors Héctor Veitía and Lourdes de los Santos; and the makeup artist, also a National Film Award winner, Magaly Pompa.

Born on August 13, 1965 in Havana, Pichi, as his friends affectionately call him, is considered the best-known Cuban male face internationally.

He began his acting career in the theater and with a brief stint in film and television, he won over the general public with the role of Diego in the film “Fresa y Chocolate” (1993), his first film success, directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío.

In the film, nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film (1994), his portrayal of the young homosexual and his relationship with David, a student trapped by political dogmas and old gender prejudices, is considered among the best successes of the national filmography.

With it, the actor won the Choral Award for Best Male Performance at the XV International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, 1993.

He also won the award for Best Performance from the Association of Entertainment Writers of New York, United States, in 1995, and from the Association of Film Critics of Los Angeles, California, in that same year, among other recognitions.

Since then, Perugorría has acted in more than 60 films, including “Che”, by Steven Soderbergh; “Vertical Love”, by Arturo Sotto; “Waiting List”, by Juan Carlos Tabío; “Four Seasons in Havana”, and “Right of Asylum”, by Octavio Cortázar, among many others.

The actor also ventured into film direction and authored the films “Afinidades”, “Amor Crónico”, “Se Vende” and “Fátima o el parque de la Fraternidad”.

On television, in 2013 he starred in the three seasons of the series Lynch, produced by Fox Telecolombia, filmed in Colombia and Argentina.

He also became interested in painting and since 2001 he began to present exhibitions with his work in Cuba, Spain and the United States. At the end of 2015 she inaugurated the Galería Taller Gorría, a cultural project and art gallery based in Old Havana.

An undeniable cultural promoter, the actor currently presides over the Gibara International Film Festival, an event created by the late Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás to promote low-income filmography, which takes place every year in the coastal town of the same name in the eastern province of Holguin.

Likewise, last year he inaugurated the “Isla Verde” Caribbean Film and Environment Festival, based on the Isle of Youth, a territory south of Cuba, an event that will reach its second edition from April 21 to 27.
