A Cuban province that suffers a peak in infections with the new coronavirus will apply another of Chinese origin, Sinopharm, together with its own vaccine.
A report from the Perlavisión channel, from Cienfuegos, in the center of the country, indicated that on Sunday the massive application of a combined Sinopharm scheme with a third dose of Soberana Plus will begin in that region.
The Soberana Plus, developed by the Finaly Institute together with another product called Soberana 02, is of national production. A third immunizer, Abdala, was created by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
Cuba is the only country in Latin America that manufactures its own vaccines.
According to the official radio station report, it will be applied to the population of Cienfuegos over 19 years of age.
The way in which Cuba obtained the Chinese vaccines was not specified, whether they were purchased by the island’s government or donated by the Asian nation, or the reason why such an immunization was ordered.
Cienfuegos and several provinces of the country, such as Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Ciego de Ávila and Havana, are in the focus of a re-outbreak of COVID-19 cases that the health authorities could not stop and put the infrastructure on the brink of collapse health of the island.
Cuba is also going through a tough economic situation after the United States increased sanctions seeking to suffocate finances to pressure a change in the political model on the island. Long lines and shortages are a common scenario these days.
An update of figures offered on Saturday by the director of Epidemiology, Francisco Durán, indicated that there are already 634,161 people infected with COVID-19 in Cuba since March 2020, of which 5,067 have died. Cienfuegos, a place of residence of less than half a million inhabitants, reported 304 cases.
