Cuba will have an electricity generation deficit of 1918 MW during peak hours

The director general of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, made a statement in the television magazine Good morning on the current state of the electricity system in Cuba, highlighting efforts to ensure supply in the midst of a generation deficit.

According to the official, the availability of power in the country for peak hours today is 1,918 MW, while the peak demand is estimated at 2,600 MW, leaving a deficit of 752 MW. Despite this difference between demand and generation, measures are being implemented to improve the situation in several areas.

Guerra Hernández said that the Mariel substation has been interconnected, which allowed the floating plant to start in that area, and the start-up of unit number 6 of the Máximo Gómez Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE) is currently starting, as well in Mariel. In addition, unit 1 of the Santa Cruz del Norte plant and unit 4 of the Cienfuegos CTE were synchronized and integrated into the system.

For today, the projection of 1918 MW of availability during peak hours is maintained. In addition, the Ministry of Energy and Mines is evaluating the possibility of connecting Pinar del Río to the National Electroenergy System (SEN), which could increase supply capacity.

Victory in Artemisa, Havana and Mayabeque

Damage to the distribution network is significant in the areas of Artemisa and Havana. In the capital, electricity coverage is 48%, and in Mayabeque it reaches 49%. The Electric Company’s forces are attending to these damages to recover quickly and re-establish service to as many customers as possible.
