Cuba will start vaccinating its population next week with vaccines of its own development, which are still in the experimental phase, the Cuban authorities announced, quoted by BTA.
The island nation is the only one in Latin America to develop five vaccines.
The vaccination campaign, which will start in the capital Havana and the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Matanzas, will use the two vaccines at the most advanced stage of development. These two vaccines – “Abdala” and “Soberana 2” are three doses.
“We believe we will be able to vaccinate 22 percent of the population by June, 33 percent by July and 70 percent by August,” said Health Minister Jose Angel Portal.
The first vaccinations will serve as a real large-scale test in the hope that it will allow the approval of these vaccines in June, the minister said.
The Abdallah vaccine has passed the third and final phase of clinical trials, the results of which are being analyzed, and Soberana 2 is expected to pass its final phase of testing in mid-May.
