Cuba has officially requested to join BRICS by sending a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This was stated by Foreign Minister Carlos Miguel Pereira on his social network X, Politico reported.

Pereira wrote that “Cuba formally requested its inclusion in BRICS as a ‘partner country’ through a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is president of the group, which is consolidating as a key player in global geopolitics and hopes for the countries of the South.” .

The foreign minister’s address to Putin comes two weeks before BRICS members meet at the bloc’s annual summit, set for October 22-24 in the Russian city of Kazan.

Also, Cuba’s bid to join the bloc comes shortly after Azerbaijan confirmed it is also pushing for membership following a meeting between Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

BRICS membership is by invitation, with several countries receiving invitations earlier this year, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Argentina was also invited but declined to join.
