Since September 24, Cuba has been the Latin American country with the highest overall vaccination rate against the coronavirus. According to data available on September 30, 2021 on the Our World in Data portal, more than eight out of ten citizens residing on the island have at least one dose of the vaccine. Of them, more than half are already fully immunized.
Even so, Uruguay and Chile continue to lead the race when analyzing the percentage of the fully immunized population, which stands at around 74% in both countries.
In early September, Cuba began to inoculate children from the age of two against COVID-19, making it the first country in the world to extend the vaccination campaign to children. By the middle of the year, many countries in the region had already begun to vaccinate minors with comorbidities from the age of 12, such as Uruguay, Argentina and Colombia.
Cuba is also one of the few countries in the world to create its own vaccine, and the first Latin American to develop it entirely in its territory. And not just one: the Cuban government has already authorized the application of two national industry vaccines, Soberana 02 and Abdala, although neither of them has been approved by the World Health Organization so far.
Meanwhile, in Argentina, according to updated figures from the Public Vaccination Monitor, 57,419,814 doses were distributed throughout the country, of which 52,396,912 were applied.
Some 29,760,609 people started their vaccination schedule and 22,636,279 already have the complete schedule.
Since the beginning of the campaign, Argentina has received 70,861,425 vaccines, which entered the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
Of the total received so far, 28,856,000 correspond to Sinopharm, 14,183,210 belong to Sputnik V (10,125,655 from component 1, and 4,057,555 from component 2), and 3,129,125 to Sputnik V produced in Argentina by the Richmond Laboratory (1,179,625 for the first component, and 1,949,500 for the second).
20,011,600 doses correspond to the AstraZeneca firm (580,000 Covishield; 1,944,000 received by the Covax mechanism, 15,695,400 from AstraZeneca and Oxford whose active ingredient was produced in Argentina; 1,242,400 donated by Spain and 549,600 by Canada). Meanwhile, 3,500,000 correspond to doses of Moderna donated by the United States, 600,000 to CanSino and 581,490 to Pfizer.
