The Cuban government managed to purchase 500 tons of powdered milk from the United States despite the so-called “blockade” used as an excuse to justify the shortage of any product in the country.
To explain this contradiction, the official press assured that this purchase was made “under the exceptions established to sell certain products to the Island, through immediate payment and in cash.”
During an extraordinary press conference of the newly appointed Minister of the Food Industry, Alberto López Díaz, the official tried to calm the people, ensuring that the purchase, as well as the ship that arrived from Brazil last monthmilk was assured for the island’s minors, at least until April.
The minister explained that the Island consumes about 2,000 tons of milk per month for children, medical diets, pregnant women and “social consumption”, an amount that must be imported due to the low production in Cuba.
“Stability in distribution is guaranteed for the months of March and April,” said the man, explaining that the 500 tons from the US were added to 500 from Brazil, 245 from Canada and 600 from other suppliers.
It is important to note that the official’s good news comes only a few days after it was known that Cuba requested help from the United Nations (UN) World Food Program (WFP)something that was conveniently not mentioned by the Cuban government during the press conference.
The purchase of this amount of milk, as well as chicken meatmedicines and a wide variety of items to the United States, make it clear that the so-called blockade is just an excuse to justify the shortcomings that the mismanagement of the Castro government causes.
The real problem of shortages on the Island is due to the fact that the Castro regime made bad decisions and ended up depleting the public coffers. As a result, there is no money to make international purchases, and the regime’s dismal payment record has meant that fewer and fewer countries want to do business with the Caribbean nation.
