The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today received the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, on an official visit to the island until tomorrow, Sunday at the Revolution Palace of this capital.
“The geographical distance that separates our countries, reflected Díaz-Canel, is not a distance in friendship. We are convinced, he stressed, that his visit will be a milestone in our friendship, ”he said.
From the Revolution Palace in Havana, dignitaries spoke about the positive state of bilateral relations and reiterated their willingness to expand cooperation in sectors such as sport, health, culture and biotechnology.
The Cambodian leader, who arrived on the island on Friday evening, reiterated his country’s position against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government on the Caribbean nation and reported on the donation of two thousand tons of rice.
For his part, President Díaz-Canel alluded to the historical ties of friendship and evoked the ties between Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and King Father Norodom Sihanouk, founders of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
In the presence of senior officials of the two territories, the head of state of the island congratulated the people and the government of the Asian country on the centenary of the birth of the king, Father Norodom Sihanouk.
The high dignitary of the Southeast Asian country arrived last night in Havana to promote an agenda that also included the placement of a floral offering in front of the monument to the National Hero José Martí and talks with the President of the Assembly National, Esteban Lazo.
This is the first visit by a senior executive from that state since the Caribbean country’s accession to the Southeast Asian Friendship and Cooperation Treaty (TAC) two years ago.
On 3 September, during a tour of that territory by the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Gerardo Peñalver Portal, the leaders of the Indochinese nation reaffirmed their sympathy for the Revolution and their willingness to expand bilateral cooperation.
In that meeting, both sides highlighted the strength of political ties and traditional cooperation in areas such as health, sport, culture and education, and recalled the dialogue between the current Cambodian Prime Minister and the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, in 1999.
In 2020, the two countries celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with numerous activities, including photo exhibitions, documentary screenings and the cancellation of a commemorative stamp, in a ceremony presided over by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.
Cambodia always recognizes before international organizations its support for the island in facing the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States, for more than six decades, and the negative consequences of that genocidal and unilateral measure.
