CSQ Affiliated Union Members Eligible for Interest-Free Loans for Past Strike Days

Members of unions affiliated with the CSQ in difficulty will be able to borrow up to the equivalent of one week’s pay, without interest, for past strike days. The center will analyze the possibility of renewing the program if other days of strikes are declared.

The initiative, implemented a few weeks ago, is specific to the CSQ and does not concern the other centrals of the Common Front.

“The CSQ offers an interest-free loan [représentant] up to one week’s net pay for the three past sequences of strikes,” explained the center.

Unlike the FAE, on indefinite strike since November 23, the teaching unions affiliated with the CSQ have walked out only in concert with the Common Front of Quebec State Employees.

This still represents three strike sequences for a total of 11 days, including two weekends.

“In the event that there is another strike sequence or an unlimited general strike, the context will be re-evaluated for the type of loan,” adds the CSQ, without closing the door to a renewal.

She also insists on the fact that it is “emergency aid” for members in difficulty.

“The loan will be repaid with feedback from the government with a view to a settlement. The idea is to make life easier for those who need this help,” underlines the center.

Other support

Although affiliated with the CSQ, the Deux Rives Education Union (SEDR), for its part, offers its members in need the Union Resistance Fund. The assistance amounts to $150 per full day of salary cut linked to the walkout.

This assistance is repayable in minimum installments of $100 monthly starting from the third pay following the agreement in principle.

In its form, the SEDR-CSQ specifies “that it reserves the right to take any action, [tout] recourse or any other procedure in the event that the borrower fails to respect its obligations.

Among certain affiliates

For its part, the FAE confirms that it does not offer loans, even if its members do not have a strike fund.

“However, certain unions affiliated with the FAE have terms of support for members which are determined locally,” specifies Marie-Josée Nantel of the FAE.
