When you name Denzel Washington as one of the greatest actors of all time, there are few people who won’t understand. The legendary actor has been delivering absolute top work for decades that has earned him no fewer than ten Oscar nominations. Cry Freedom is set in the 1970s during the apartheid era in South Africa. Washington plays the role of freedom fighter Steve Biko. Together with Donald Woods (Kevin Kline), a white reporter who was close friends with Biko, he played an important role in the fight against apartheid.
Woods initially finds Biko’s approach too radical and therefore tries to understand him better. When Biko is arrested, Woods is determined not to let Biko’s message go unheeded and decides to share Biko’s story with the world.
Breakthrough
Washington favored Cry Freedom played in quite a few movies. He also had a leading role in the series St. Elsewhere. He appeared in a whopping 137 episodes of this medical drama. However, he really didn’t break through until 1989 with his role in Cry Freedom.

The Equalizer 3 and future
Something Washington almost never does is star in a sequel to one of his movies. In 2018 he did this for the first time when there was a sequel to it The Equalizer popped up. Washington and director Antoine Fuqua now have the third and final Equalizermovie made.
You can see The Equalizer 3 in theaters now. Washington’s next role is in Ridley Scotts Gladiator 2. Due to the actors’ strike, the recordings were recently stopped, so an exact release date is currently not available. With any luck, the film will be released in theaters next year.
