Cruzeiro’s Early Elimination from 2024 Copa do Brasil: Financial and Sporting Losses Ensure Challenges Ahead

Cruzeiro’s early elimination from the 2024 Copa do Brasil will bring financial and sporting losses to the club throughout the season. Despite this, coach Nicolás Larcamón has already taken the first measures with the group of players after the 2-0 defeat to Sousa-PB.

Following the final whistle of Wednesday’s match (21), the coach gathered the players still on the pitch and gave the first message to the group, already thinking about the future.

“(He said) That the whole game, all this scolding has to be fuel for what we have ahead. That the game (against Sousa-PB) is not the end of the work that is happening. We are working hard to make a great Mineiro , to start the Copa Sudamericana very well”, he revealed.

Cruzeiro’s stumble was treated as an embarrassment by the fans, who showed their indignation on social media. Some players were more criticized, such as goalkeeper Rafael Cabral, defender Neris and midfielder Lucas Silva.

Larcamón also revealed that the conversation with the athletes was to show the importance of overcoming the trauma of defeat. In the coach’s view, it is necessary to transform the elimination into fuel for the rest of the year.

“Unfortunately, it was a night we didn’t expect, we didn’t even deserve it. This is not just merit, it is being responsible. Finding in defeat the fuel to continue together, united, to continue working the way we are working. A few weeks ago we were celebrating victory in a classic, and now we have to be balanced in triumph and defeat to be a consistent team throughout the year”, he concluded.

Tragic elimination

The tournament’s biggest champion with six titles, Cruzeiro entered this year’s Copa do Brasil with the aim of surpassing the performance presented in the last two editions. However, he failed to meet the first target set by the Sociedade Anônima de Futebol (SAF) of the year.

Since becoming SAF, in 2022, the most Cruzeiro had achieved was reaching the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. In the board’s planning, according to Itatiaia’s findings, the expectation was that the celestial team would reach at least a place in the quarterfinals of this year’s competition. Goal frustrated with the stumble against Sousa-PB.

Stop making millions

Without a place in the next phase and out of the competition, Cruzeiro will no longer add a few million to its coffers immediately. The prize for going to the second phase would be R$1.4 million.

For the classification, Sousa-PB will receive the “PIX” from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in the amount of R$ 750 thousand. This is the quota allocated to clubs in Series C and D of the Brazilian Championship, classified in the second phase of the Copa do Brasil.

According to celestial calculations, the expectation was to reach almost R$ 13 million in revenue in the Copa do Brasil. This amount will be paid by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to the teams that reach the quarter-final stage.

Other Cruzeiro objectives for 2024

Minas Gerais Championship

On the field, Cruzeiro will try to regain, initially, its state leadership. The club has not won the Campeonato Mineiro since 2019. Winning the local tournament is one of the goals set by the board.

Brazilian championship

Cruzeiro’s goal, according to the board’s planning, is to finish the 2024 Brazilian Championship in at least eighth place.

Libertadores Cup

The Copa Libertadores da América is also an obsession for Cruzeiro this year. After qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana, the goal for 2024 is, perhaps, to guarantee Cruzeiro’s return to the biggest tournament in South America.
