Cruzeiro announces the signing of Gabriel Verón, from Porto, on loan
“He’s a player of great quality, as everyone knows, so much so that Porto signed him. But in those 26 games, he didn’t play any full games, because he was systematically injured.”
Conceição’s response took place at a press conference, this Thursday. He was asked about the reason for Gabriel Veron’s loan to cruise until the end of 2024, after investing more than R$55 million in July last year.
The coach mentioned that, even when he was used a lot, in the 2022/2023 season, Veron demonstrated difficulties in continuing due to his physical aspect. Sérgio Conceição stated that resuming his career depends on the player, after receiving support from the Portuguese club.
– For one reason or another, Veron had the misfortune of getting injured many times. When he recovered, in the first training session with more intensity, he injured himself again. In a game that lasted five or ten minutes, he would get injured.
“We did everything we could to help Veron be successful, now it’s up to him too, with this new step in his career, to prepare well and justify all his quality and the investment that Porto made in him.”
Without specifically mentioning Gabriel Veron’s routine at Porto, Sérgio Conceição explained that players with a history of injuries need to adapt their daily routine, with more time in training centers and carrying out work also outside the schedule established for the squad, in general. .
– We have a medical department, physical trainers, physiologists… everyone works very well on the players’ recovery, but then it’s up to the players. We control the players for three hours, then it’s up to them to do “invisible” training. Other players, who have this propensity to have more injuries, have to treat them more, be even more professional.
“Our concentration is at 9:15 am, but there are players who arrive at 7:50 am, and training starts at 10:30 am. This is very important in life. The games are more intense, there are more games per season, and the player needs to realize that it depends on his body.”
According to a survey by the website Transfermarkt, Gabriel Veron has had four injuries since arriving at Porto. In the current European season, which started in the middle of the year, there were two. The first happened in the adductor of the right leg, on July 25th. In October, playing for team B, he suffered a tear in his left thigh muscle and is still undergoing treatment.

Muscle injuries hindered the beginning of Veron’s career as a professional at Palmeiras. The player, who has always been highly rated from a technical point of view, had important absences due to physical issues. An injury to his left thigh, for example, caused the striker to be removed from the 2020 Club World Cup, played in February 2021. In April of that year
