The game of hide-and-seek with rubber ducks aboard cruise ships has prompted Disney Cruise Line to release new guidelines.

Nausea or annoying cabin neighbors are standard on a cruise. A new trend suggests that there wouldn’t be enough exciting things to experience for passengers on board a holiday ship: They have recently started hiding rubber ducks on the ships. Subsequent cruise guests should then find them. Shipping companies are already annoyed or have even published new guidelines.

Hand luggage with rubber ducks

According to the New York Post, it all started with a game of rubber duck hide-and-seek played by a young girl named Abby Davis. Shortly afterwards, the first YouTube videos and Facebook groups from cruise guests appeared who shared tips for good hiding places. The plastic toy is now sold on board for the equivalent of 25 Swiss francs and passengers can even use it to fill an entire piece of hand luggage. How come?

“Our goal is to see how far our ducks travel and where their journey might take them,” the Facebook group Cruising Ducks announced on its page. A Reddit user then announcedhaving paid extra hand luggage for the ducks. Another Reddit user printed extra 3D ducks with the anchor logo the Royal Caribbean cruise group to hide them on board.

The aim of the game: A duck should stay hidden for as long as possible in order to cover a long journey in the hiding place.

Consequences for the environment

Both Reddit users received many comments on their posts. Above all, they receive criticism for the fact that the plastic ducks cause waste and negative consequences for the environment. After all, a truck full of plastic ends up in the ocean every minute. “Please don’t do it” someone comments on the post.

The Disney Cruise Line is also not very enthusiastic about duck hunting: According to “Thrillist,” the cruise line has introduced a new policy that restricts the hiding of rubber ducks on board: “Guests are not allowed to have things, such as rubber ducks, in cabins or public areas “Hide the ship,” says the instructions.
