Ajax unveiled the statue of Johan Cruijff on Friday afternoon. From Friday, the statue will be next to the main entrance of the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Due to the corona measures, the disclosure could not take place earlier. A new moment was determined in consultation with the Cruijff family. The statue was created by artist Hans Jouta, who also made the statue of Bobbie Haarms ten years ago. He was present at the unveiling on Friday, as were Sjaak Swart, Frank Rijkaard, Viggo Waas and Peter Heerschop, ambassadors of the Cruyff Foundation.

Making a statue of Cruijff was an initiative of the working group ‘this man deserves a statue‘ in 2018. In less than three months, Ajax fans raised more than 75,000 euros to pay for it. The statue was finally unveiled on August 21, 2020 around 4:15 PM. It has become a bronze and life-size statue close to the statue of Haarms.

“We have already seen the statue and it looks great”, says son Jordi Cruijff. “On behalf of the family, I would like to thank all the supporters of Ajax who have worked and contributed to the realization of this beautiful tribute to my father. My father would have been proud of this. If you walk by, you see Johan Cruijff. stand.”
Cruyff died on March 24, 2016 at the age of 68.
