Crowne Plaza (Adyar Park) Shuts Down After 38 Years: Luxury Apartments to Take Its Place

CHENNAI: Crowne Plaza (Adyar Park), a prominent star hotel in the city for 38 years, is shutting down. Crowne Plaza is also a location in the Sathyan Anthikkad-directed movie ‘Nadotikat’ – the place where Mohanlal and Srinivasan’s Dasan and Vijayan don their Arab costumes. A few Tamil films have also been shot.

The authorities announced the closure of the hotel on Tuesday night. The hotel doors will be closed to guests on December 20. Membership ends on the 16th.

TT in 1981 under the name Holiday Inn. The hotel was started by a businessman named Vasu. Later it was renamed as Adyar Gate. Later it bought Goyals, a hotel-clothing export firm. After that, Sheraton Hotels acquired the park under the control of ITC. Meanwhile, ITC Crowne Plaza Chennai was renamed as Adyar Park after the group built the Grand Chola Hotel.

Crowne Plaza on Chamiers Road has 287 rooms. There were restaurants that served Kerala food as well. Luxury apartments will now rise on the one and a half acres where the hotel used to be. It is being built by real estate firm Basyam Group. The plan is to develop it into a residential area with around 130 apartments.

Each flat will have a size of 5,000 to 7,000 square feet. A flat is expected to cost between 15 crores and 21 crores.
