Crown Prince Pavlos Receives Athenagoras Human Rights Prize on Behalf of the Prince’s Trust

Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece was charged by King Charles III of the United Kingdom with collecting the Athenagoras Prize which was awarded to his foundation, during an evening organized in New York by the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of America.

Godson of King Charles III receives Athenagoras Human Rights Prize on behalf of the Prince’s Trust

This October 21, 2023, the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of America organized their annual Athenagoras Prize ceremony, at the Hilton Hotel in New York. Every year, the archons gather and present the Athenagoras Human Rights Prize at a banquet. The Athenagorss Human Rights Prize was awarded this year to the Prince’s Trust International. The Prince’s Trust is a charitable organization founded by King Charles III, when he was Prince of Wales, in 1976. The foundation works mainly with young people. Since 2015, the Prince’s Trust has been operating worldwide with the creation of Prince’s Trust International.

This Saturday, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, 56 years old, son of King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie, current head of the Greek royal family since the death of his father in January 2023, was commissioned by King Charles III to collect the prize in New York. Crown Prince Pavlos, Charles’ cousin and godson, lives primarily in the United States. Pavlos has supported the international branch since its creation. Notably, he served as chair of the organization’s international advisory board, leading the strategic direction of the foundation in its early days.

Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Windsors have been a younger branch of the Greek royal family, belonging to the family of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. The archons reward the foundation of King Charles III

Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, together with Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, National Commander of the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate presented the trophy to Crown Prince Pavlos, who represented Charles III and his foundation. More than 600 archons and their guests attended the ceremony. Archons are lay people distinguished by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This is an honorary title conferred by Bartholomew I of Constantinople. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople is the first autocephalous jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church. Its current primate, Bartholomew, is considered the heir of Saint Andrew, founder of the archbishopric of Constantinople.

Bartholomew I of Constantinople, absent at the ceremony, had however recorded a message. In presenting this award to the Prince’s Trust International, “we recognize the profound impact this organization has had in promoting a fairer and more inclusive society. This award highlights the vital role that organizations like the Prince’s Trust play in ensuring that the fundamental rights and dignity of all individuals are respected.” Archbishop Elpidophoros also praised the foundation which “has had multiple impacts across the world, and particularly in Greece during the economic turmoil of the last decade. »

The letter written by King Charles III was read during the ceremony: “I can’t tell you how sorry I am not to be with you in person on this occasion to celebrate the work of the Prince’s Trust”said King Charles. “I am particularly delighted that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Pavlos, Vice-President of Prince’s Trust International, has agreed to receive the Athenagoras Human Rights Prize this evening. I am really pleased that the work of the foundation continues to go from strength to strength, having in recent years expanded from its mission in the UK and now supporting young people in twenty-three countries, including Greece and the United States -United America where we recently launched our Enterprise Challenge program in New York and Chicago. »

Crown Prince Pavlos, who was accompanied by his wife, Crown Princess Marie-Chantal, also spoke a speech during the banquet which followed the ceremony: “ It is an honor for me to accept a human rights award, which bears the name of one of the great Church leaders of the 20th century, the late Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Athenagoras I.” The Athenagoras Human Rights Prize was established in 1986 by the National Council of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, an order led by the Archons branch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of America.
