On Friday, the dissemination expedition reached the first sub-goal, which was to cross the Greenland ice sheet, from west to east. Here, Crown Prince Haakon ends the journey, while the other participants paddle further on the east coast from Dannebrog to Antarctichavn.

It is a little over two weeks since Crown Prince Haakon set out on an expedition across the Greenland ice sheet. Since the start at Ilulissat on Friday 20 May, the expedition has sailed 1,200 kilometers by kite.

The participants have been up at an altitude of almost 3000 meters above sea level, had night temperatures down to minus 30 degrees and a wind speed up to 20 m / s, writes Kongehuset on its website.

On From his blog reveals that the last few days have been long and hectic.

“We woke up to strong winds and a rather messy ski run, to put it mildly. The temperature was low, but the visibility was good – and we rigged ourselves with the smallest sails and kites we have with us. 100 km later, we sit happy and tired in the tent on top of what was once called Eirik Raudes Land »it says, among other things.

The Crown Prince is praised

Despite rough days, it also seems that the participants are in good spirits and have had a nice trip so far:

“It is an adventurous sight – and a fantastic feeling to be finished with the sailing trip across the ice sheet in Greenland. 1228 kilometers, according to the log on the Crown Prince’s new watch “it says, among other things.

In the latest diary entry from expedition leader Harald Dag Jølle, Crown Prince Haakon gets good shots for his efforts over the ice:

“He has been involved in everything that needs to be done when the tent is going up and down. Sledges must be unpacked and re-packed. The primus should be lit and water should be melted. Latrine is dug and polar bear protection is stretched around the camp. In addition, he is perhaps the most steady sailor of us all. And persevering. Several times I have noticed that he jumps under the kite at the end of the day – while I myself burn in the knees from pain after many hours with high speed on the skis “, writes Jølle.

The expedition started in Ilulissat on 19 May, and the Crown Prince has taken part in the first part that crosses the inland ice with kite (sail) and skis as a means of transport, it was said in a press release from UiT in May.

This year it is 50 years since King Olav officially opened the University of Tromsø. That is why UiT has organized a research expedition. Crown Prince Haakon participates as one of the expedition members.

The purpose of the expedition is to disseminate knowledge and insight about Arctic nature, research and polar history. In addition, the expedition will take regular snow samples to be delivered to climate scientists at the Eastgrip research station, which is located in the middle of the Greenland ice sheet.
