Kassel – Corona has been a part of everyday life in Kassel for more than two years. A host of new infections are added every day. According to current knowledge, the corona virus originated in the large area of ​​the Chinese metropolis of Wuhan in late 2019. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the corona pandemic as a “health emergency of concern. international”.

Corona in Hesse: the omicron wave follows the delta variant

At the start of the pandemic, it was the delta variant of the coronavirus in Kassel that caused most of the infections. In mid-March 2020, just over three months after the outbreak of the pandemic in China, the lockdown was imposed in Kassel and throughout Hesse. Schools and crèches had to close, catering and the retail trade could no longer serve customers on site.

After a brief phase of relaxation between May and October 2020, Kassel entered another national bloc between November 2020 and February 2021, albeit with more flexible measures than the first bloc.

The vaccination campaign in Kassel and Hesse began around the beginning of 2021. Although two corona vaccinations were initially recommended, the omicron wave later in the year meant that the vaccination recommendation was expanded to include a booster vaccination against a severe course of Covid 19 disease.

However, the number of crown cases will be at a record high in 2022. However, most of the restrictions on the crown in Hesse were lifted on April 2, 2022. At a federal state summit on February 16, 2022, the heads of states federal and federal government around Chancellor Olaf Scholz have agreed on a gradual and broad relaxation of previous protective measures. For example, the mask is no longer needed in the Kassel supermarket.

Additionally, the RKI warns: It could be that the decline in incidence does not reflect the actual infection process, but is the result of an overloaded reporting and testing system. Also, it might play a role that some people haven’t made clear on their positive self-test or quick test with a PCR test. So they won’t appear in the stats.
