Crowds lead to more traffic violations, speed camera catches many

Motorists are again committing more traffic violations, according to figures published by several regional broadcasters. Between May and September, nearly 300,000 more traffic fines were handed out than a year ago.

The fines (almost 3 million in total) include speeding, driving through a red light and using a mobile phone.

The Ministry of Justice and Security thinks that the increase in the number of traffic violations in the second four months of this year is partly due to more traffic on the road compared to the same period last year. In March 2020, the government called on everyone to work from home as much as possible because of the corona pandemic.

Speed camera at Gouda flashes the most

More than 1.1 million of all violations were registered by a speed camera. The pole that caught the most speeders is at Gouda, reports RTV Utrecht. 17,256 traffic offenders passed there between May and September.

Of the provinces, most speeding offenses are attributable to South Holland: 373,702. Noord-Brabant is in second place with 149,127 violations, followed by Noord-Holland with 126,312 speeding violations.

The cities of Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague have argued this week for more speed cameras, to promote road safety, to prevent nuisance and as an alternative to checks by police officers and enforcers.
