Crowded Pfizer Vaccine Residents, Israel’s Covid Cases Set a Record

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaIsrael recorded 11,137 new daily cases of Covid-19 infection on Tuesday (31/8/2021). This beat the previous record high, with 10,118 new daily cases on January 18, 2021.

Despite the daily spike in cases, the Israeli government continues to implement plans to fully open the school system tomorrow, Wednesday (1/9/2021), while increasing the country’s vaccination rate.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the spike could be controlled through inoculation and protective measures such as masks.

The government has also encouraged all residents aged 12 and over to get a booster shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Bennett says the launch of the booster shot program is showing results, particularly by limiting the increase in hospitalizations.

About 60% of Israel’s 9.3 million population have received two shots of the vaccine, including 80% of adults.

In December 2020, Israel was one of the first countries to launch a national vaccination campaign, which brought down daily infections to allow lifting almost all pandemic restrictions by June 2021.

However, due to the spike in cases, several measures have been reintroduced, including the wearing of masks indoors, restrictions on gatherings and the need to show proof of vaccination to enter certain facilities.

Israel now has a total of 1,066,352 infections and 7,043 deaths, according to Worldometers data.
