“Cannabis legalization appears to have accelerated the trend of daily marijuana use,” said UNODC Reuters on Monday (27/6/2022).

“The proportion of people with psychiatric disorders and suicide related to regular marijuana use is increasing,” he continued.

It said about 284 million people, or 5.6 percent of the world’s population, had used drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, amphetamines or ecstasy in 2020. Of these, about 209 million of them also admitted to using marijuana.

“The lockdown period during the COVID-19 pandemic also contributed to the consumption of marijuana in 2020,” concluded UNODC.
