The Crow Creek is a 246 km long, left tributary of the South Platte River in the U.S. states of Wyoming and Colorado.[1]
Crow Creek is formed by the confluence of its two source rivers, North Fork Crow Creek and Middle Crow Creek, in the southeastern foothills of the Laramie Mountains at an altitude of 1,964 m, about 20 km west of Cheyenne in the state of Wyoming.[1] From there it flows east through Laramie County and runs along the Union Pacific Railroad line to the northwestern suburbs of Cheyenne, the state capital. Crow Creek runs west-east through the southern city center, under Interstate 125, US Highway 30 and Interstate 180 and passes the Union Pacific Railroad Depot. East of the city, the river is dammed to form the Wyoming Hereford Ranch Reservoir Number 1 and Number 2 and then meanders through the High Plains southeast of Cheyenne. It receives a few smaller tributaries, most of which flow on the orographic right bank of the river, passes the town of Carpenter and turns south, where it reaches Weld County in the state of Colorado. Crow Creek flows past the towns of Hereford, Grover and Briggsdale through the Great Plains and parts of the Pawnee National Grasslands, passes under Colorado State Highway 14 and runs southwest along Colorado State Highway 392 before flowing into the South Platte River about 153 miles (246 km) east of Kersey and about 9 miles (15 km) east of the city of Greeley at an elevation of 4,500 feet (1,390 m).[1]
As a tributary of the South Platte River, Crow Creek is part of the Platte River drainage basin, which drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Missouri and Mississippi. The Crow Creek drainage basin covers an area of 3476 km²[2] and borders the drainage basins of Lodgepole Creek to the north, Pawnee Creek to the east, and Lone Tree Creek to the west.[1] Crow Creek runs as a narrow stream throughout the semi-arid High Plains, the westernmost part of the Great Plains.
