Crossing between sheep droppings on a garbage dump in Drenthe: this is what the European Championship looks like

The VAM mountain owes its name to the Vuil Afvoer Maatschappij, which from 1929 onwards dumped household waste from the Randstad. The ‘mountain’, which is exactly 56 meters above NAP, has grown over time to become the highest point in Drenthe, but is no longer a garbage dump.

The waste is covered with soil and grass and serves as pasture for grazing sheep. Since October 2018, the hill has also been open to cyclists and walkers.

Are Van der Poel and Van Aert participating?

The main question. Actually the question that will be asked at just about every men’s cross this season. The answer is: no.

Mathieu van der Poel took a rest after Paris-Roubaix and does not start cyclo-cross until mid-December. It is still unclear to Wout van Aert which cyclocross races he will participate in, but he will also not start racing again until December. And that other all-rounder, Olympic mountain biking champion Tom Pidcock, is not there either.
