Crop fields are burning near the front line in Ukraine / Article

As a result of artillery fire by Russian troops, wheat fields in the Kharkiv region turn into ashes. Invaders purposefully destroy food warehouses, fields and crops.

Russia and the Russian armed forces are to blame for the food crisis. They destroy our warehouses, our crops, our fields, our food, our animals. They destroy everything. Everything we have planted with our own hands, they destroy,” said a Ukrainian soldier.

Ukraine is the world’s leading exporter of wheat, barley, corn and sunflower oil. Although grain exports from Ukraine are expected to resume soon, supply shortages have so far pushed up food prices around the world.

CONTEXT:

Due to the Russian invasion, Ukraine severely reduced its grain exports.

However, on July 22 in Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia signed separate agreements with Turkey and the UN on the resumption of grain exports from Black Sea ports. Ukraine in advance announced, that the agreement on the resumption of grain exports will be signed only with Turkey and the UN, rejecting any direct deals with Moscow. Russia signed a separate identical agreement with Turkey and the UN.

Ukraine’s most important port city Odesa was rocked by new explosions on July 23. The Russian armed forces shelled the city only a day after the agreement signed in Turkey on ending the blockade of Ukrainian ports and resuming grain exports. Ukrainian officials blame Russia for targeted shelling of grain warehouseswhich the signed agreement prohibits.
