Crocodile often become ridicule for men who like to change partners. In fact, these animals are incredibly loyal to their partners.
This was demonstrated through research on the crocodile mating system by University of Georgia experts, namely Travis Glenn, Ruth Elsey, Tracey Tuberville and Stacey Lance for a decade. The results of the study revealed that 70 percent of female crocodiles mate with the same partner in every breeding season.
They examined the alligator alligator mating system at the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge (RWR), Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in Louisiana, United States (US). The researchers observed alligators 41 km long in the Long Island Sound.
“Given how very open and dense the crocodile population is at RWR, we were not expecting to find alligator loyalty,” said Lance. Science Daily.
“70 per cent of the female alligators go back to mates. It’s absolutely incredible,” Lance added.
In that study, female crocodile in RWR move freely through male territory leading to high mating encounter rates. However, many crocodiles choose to mate with the same partner for several breeding seasons.
“I didn’t expect the same pair of crocodiles, which were bred together in 1997, were still mating in 2005 and are probably still making nests together today,” he said.
The study also found one cost the male was responsible for all the offspring produced by the same female crocodile in the breeding seasons of 2000, 2002 and 2004.
In addition, female alligators show great care and protection for their young. That’s so the young crocodiles are not preyed on by adult crocodiles.
Meanwhile, after the breeding season and the eggs hatch, male and female crocodile pairs are known as extraordinary parents. They share tasks and take turns looking after their babies. The male crocodile is also in charge of finding food for the female crocodile.
