Spaniards Rafa Nadal and Marc López are relieved in the track record
MADRID, 30 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Croatian couple Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic won the gold medal in the men’s doubles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this Friday by beating their compatriots Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig 6-4, 3-6 and 10-6 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 38 minutes.
Pavic and Mektic, the main seeds, confirmed their favoritism in the Japanese capital and left the other Croatian duo of the tournament with the silver. In addition, they relieve the Spanish couple formed by Rafael Nadal and Marc López, winners in Rio 2016, as Olympic champions.
Pavic and Mektic, finalists at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open, won the first set 6-4, not without difficulties at the beginning, and delivered the second 6-3. The game was equalized and he had to break the tie-break and that was where the gold fell on his side.
“We are very happy to win the title and just to have been to the Olympics already,” Mektic said after the medal ceremony. “Having such a good result is more than a dream come true and I am very happy to share this moment with Mate [Pavic]”he added.
For their part, the bronze medal went to New Zealanders Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus, who made history for their country’s tennis by winning the first Olympic medal in their history on Friday. They beat Americans Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren 7-6 (3) 6-2 in the final.
