The adoption of crypto is steadily growing! This time good news from Croatia, there accepts the largest supermarket chain in the country, Konzum, now uses cryptocurrencies as a payment method. Customers can now pay for their groceries with bitcoin (BTC).
Buy groceries with bitcoin
Konzum is Croatia’s largest supermarket chain. The company has about 700 stores across the country with a total of 10,000 employees. It is striking that the chain has been accepting crypto payments since today. For the time being, the option only applies to the webshop where customers can buy “groceries, hygiene and household items and other products”. The webshop has 12,000 articles in its range.
The company has taken the step to show that it “continues to follow global trends, introduce innovations and set the standard in retail.” Konzum wants to eventually roll out the crypto payments in its physical stores as well. A great development for the adoption of crypto as a means of payment!
Besides BTC also ethereum and more
In total, Konzum accepts 8 cryptocurrencies in its webshop. In collaboration with payment processor Electrocoin, the retail chain accepts bitcoin in addition to ethereum (ETH), bitcoin cash (BCH), EOS, DAI, ripple (XRP), stellar lumen (XLM), tether (USDT) and USDC. The latter two are stablecoins.
How it work
In the announcement, Konzum explains exactly how the process works for customers. Once the customer has filled his or her shopping cart, the customer can choose to pay with crypto. After clicking this option, a QR code is automatically generated that can be scanned with a crypto wallet. After payment, the customer receives a confirmation in the mail with the invoice, and Kees is ready!
Cryptocurrencies are known to be highly volatile and so they will not always be attractive as a means of payment. Therefore, Konzum’s system guarantees a price at the start of the transaction. This way the customer knows that the amount sent in crypto will be enough to complete the transaction.
