Croatian central defender Borevkovic was tasked with monitoring Leonine striker Viktor Gyokeres and he didn’t do too badly with the thorny task. To the club’s media, he explained the secret behind the success.
«It was the merit of the entire team. I counted a lot on the help of my teammates in midfield and defense. Together, we did a good job. We knew that Sporting is looking for depth, with Gyökeres as a reference, and we were prepared for that. We did everything the manager wanted. I was always attentive to the depth of this Sporting forward, playing in anticipation and taking advantage of my speed. «Gyökeres is among the best forwards I’ve ever faced. So, suddenly, I remember having already faced Darwin Nuñez, Bas Dost… They are players with a lot, a lot of quality and, at this point, Gyökeres is already an important asset in European football. His merit. However, Vitória SC also has good players and, therefore, we played a very good game”, he stressed, with certainty: “It was one of my best games in Portugal.”
The Croatian also revealed a little about how he prepared to face Gyokeres.
«I usually analyze strikers by watching videos. And several were made available by the team staff. It was clear then that Sporting bets a lot on depth, becoming especially dangerous on the counterattack. We worked a lot on these aspects the week before the game and the truth is that things went very well,” he explained.
The emotions of the game ended up taking away his sleep…
