A major earthquake has caused significant damage in the Croatian capital, Zagreb. The epicenter of the 5.3 magnitude quake was north of the city. There are no reports of victims yet.
“It lasted more than 10 seconds, by far the longest quake I’ve ever felt,” an eyewitness told Reuters news agency. Some aftershocks have also been observed. After the earthquake, a number of places started fires or power outages.
Images shared via social media show cracks in buildings in the historic center of Zagreb and debris on cars and on the street.

One of the spiers of the Zagreb Cathedral has also been demolished. This Gothic church from the thirteenth century was partly rebuilt after a major earthquake between 1880 and 1906.
