Croatia: Rejected by hospitals, a woman fights to abort a non-viable fetus

6 months pregnant, the Croatian Mirela Cavajda learns that her fetus has a brain tumor, the chances for the child to survive are then minimal. As the law authorizes in her country, she decides to have an abortion. But the hospitals in his city have all denied him this right.

Mirela, already a mother of a child, was denied the right to an abortion by 4 hospitals of Zagreb, the Croatian capital. The doctors advised her to go to Slovenia for an abortion, others claimed not to have the necessary equipment, or not to be able to confirm the diagnosis. And some even refused without giving a reason. After the media coverage of his case and pro-choice demonstrations across the country, she finally obtained the right to abort on May 11. It was the Minister of Health himself, Vili Beros, who gave the order. “The medico-legal conditions for authorizing abortion are met,” the latter told reporters according to Euronews.

The right to abortion threatened by the Church

And Croatia, abortion is authorized up to the 10th week in case of danger for the fetus or the mother. Mirela’s case meets these conditions, so how come the doctors denied her this right? Since 2003, conscientious objection allows doctors to refuse to perform abortion, so as not to go against their belief. In a country whose the population is 90% Catholicand with a strong influence of the church (according to The Guardian), the fundamental rights of women are acquired, but far from being applied. The war of beliefs is taking place within the government itself, and tensions are currently rising in the country. In 2017, conservative groups, supported by the Catholic Church, demanded a total ban on abortion, a request immediately rejected by the Croatian constitutional court.
